The Complete Guide

What is a Dowel?

A cylindrical rod — usually wood — used to join, align and reinforce. Simple in form, but quietly holding together everything from cabinets to wedding cakes.

Definition

A small part with a big job

A dowel is a cylindrical rod, most often turned from solid timber, though plastic and metal versions exist. In its original full-length manufactured form it's known as a dowel rod; cut down into short lengths it becomes a dowel pin.

Dowels work by sitting inside matching drilled holes across two pieces of material, locking them in alignment and resisting movement. No visible fixings, no metal fasteners — just a clean, strong, hidden joint that's been trusted by makers for centuries.

Know Your Dowels

Types of dowel

The right dowel depends on the join, the load and the finish you're after.

Dowel Rods

Dowel Rods

Long, smooth cylindrical lengths — the original form, cut to size as needed.

Dowel Pins

Dowel Pins

Short, pre-cut lengths sized for joinery — drop straight into drilled holes.

Fluted Dowel Pins

Fluted Dowel Pins

Grooved along their length so glue spreads evenly for a stronger bond.

Spiral / Grooved

Spiral / Grooved

Spiral channels that release trapped air and excess glue when assembled.

Square Dowels

Square Dowels

Square-section timber for framing, crafts and decorative work.

Charging Sticks

Charging Sticks

Extra-long rods used in mining and industrial charging applications.

Buyer's Guide

How to choose the right dowel

A few quick considerations go a long way to getting a clean, lasting joint:

  • Diameter — match the dowel to your drill bit and the thickness of the material you're joining.
  • Length — longer dowels for structural loads, shorter pins for light alignment.
  • Timber — Saligna for hardwearing strength, Pine for lighter general-purpose work.
  • Fluted vs smooth — choose fluted or grooved pins when you're gluing for maximum hold.

Dowel in Afrikaans

The traditional Afrikaans words — houtnael, klink, klinkbout or pen — are a little old-fashioned today, so most people simply use the English word. The commonly accepted everyday term is “stokkie”.

FAQs

Common dowel questions

Dowels join, align and reinforce two pieces of material — most commonly in furniture and cabinet making, but also in construction, crafts, signage, toys and even cake supports. They create a strong, hidden joint with no visible fasteners.

A dowel rod is the full-length manufactured form. A dowel pin is a short length cut from that rod, sized for slotting into drilled holes to make a joint.

Smooth dowels have a plain surface, while fluted dowels have grooves running along their length. The grooves let glue spread evenly and allow trapped air to escape, which generally makes for a stronger glued joint.

Saligna is a dense hardwood that's ideal where strength and durability matter. Pine is lighter and more economical, making it a great choice for general-purpose and craft work. We supply both, plus exotic timbers on request.

Our standard dowels range from 6mm up to 25mm in diameter, in 900mm and 1800mm lengths. That said, all diameters, lengths and species are available on request — just send us your specs.

As a rule of thumb, match the dowel diameter to your drill bit and keep it proportional to the thickness of the material you're joining. For load-bearing joints, go thicker; for light alignment, a thinner pin will do.
